Here are a few ideas for seasonal destinations that fit well around the windows created by UK bank holidays.
You may be thinking that you want to get Christmas out of the way before turning your attention to holiday plans. However, booking early brings a host of benefits: good flight availability; a greater choice of accommodation; early bird offers which can be excellent value. Check out our recent blog 6 reasons to book your 2019 holidays early which tells you more about this.
Christmas and New Year 2018
2018’s Christmas Day falls on Tuesday which means gives us three bank holidays. Finish work on 21st December and take three days of annual leave. This can secure a 11 day Christmas break, returning to work on 2nd January.
Short haul destinations include Southern Europe, the Canary Islands and at a push, Cape Verde. For long-haul sunshine, check out the Caribbean and Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. And if a Winter break is more your thing, the ski season will be in full swing with a choice of destinations across Europe, USA and Canada. And in the build-up to Christmas, there’s option of a short break. How about visiting some of the iconic Christmas markets? Those in Germany and Austria are particularly good.
The Easter weekend falls late in 2019. Easter Friday (19th April) and Easter Monday (22nd April) combine to create two four-day working weeks. So you could spin out 2019 leave by combining them to take eight days off work, creating a 16 day break.
Good short-haul destinations at this time of year include the Canary Islands, Southern Europe and Morocco. Temperatures here are very pleasant. For a blast of floral Spring colour, head to the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris and at Keukenhof near Amsterdam. Dubai is also a good option – a longer flight but well worth the effort. Long-haul wise, the Caribbean and Florida are a good option and the weather here is pretty reliable.
Spring Bank Holidays – May 2019
The Spring Bank holidays (6th and 27th May) offer the chance, by taking four days off work, to create two separate nine day breaks. Coming closely behind the Easter break, we will all be enjoying a concentrated period of time off. It’s a great opportunity to spin out 2019 leave.
If you are looking at short-haul options, consider Southern Europe. Corsica, Sardinia, Italy, Sicily and southern Italy are beautiful in early May. Later in the month, the temperatures in Crete, Cyprus and Greece start to climb. And the Canary Islands are a good consistent option.
Long-haul, temperatures in the Caribbean will be in the mid-20s, whilst in Florida, home to Disney and much more, it’s likely to be in the high 20s. Conversely, in the southern hemisphere, they are heading into Winter but that doesn’t always mean it will be cold. In Peru in May, for example, the climate is dry and temperatures can climb into the 80s. This is a good time to visit Machu Picchu if you can get a slot. Whilst In South Africa, May is wine harvest season. Further afield, down under, in Australia, it is the best time of the year in which to spot whale sharks.
August 2019’s bank holiday falls on the 26th of the month. Again there’s the opportunity to take four days annual leave, creating a nine day break.
Greece is a great short-haul destination in August. And the Canary Islands remain a popular alternative. Of course, the summer is a good time to holiday here in the UK. This summer has been wonderful and the number of staycations increased significantly. We live in such a beautiful place. Further afield, the Seychelles and Mauritius, Indonesia and French Polynesia are all wonderful, exotic destinations. Rain fall and humidity are relatively light in August and temperatures are good.
Not all of us want or are able to take leave around bank holidays. Or you may just prefer to travel at quieter times of the year. For all round sunshine, Ecuador and the Galapagos sit on the equator and enjoy consistent temperatures and weather. The Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles and Hawaii are other contenders. Closer to home, the Canary Islands are a good short-haul option all-year-round. Temperatures here do dip in the Winter but remain pleasant.
