Our well-travelled travel consultant, Bob Mortimore recently visited the Caribbean islands of St Lucia and Mustique courtesy of Elegant Resorts. During his trip, he visited a series of beautiful hotels including Sugar Beach St Lucia. Here are his travel notes from his visit. This is the fifth of a series of blog posts which detail Bob’s trip around the two islands.
About Sugar Beach, St Lucia
The Viceroy Resort of Sugar Beach (formerly known as The Jalousie Plantation) is situated in the south west of St Lucia. Spread over 100 acres of rainforest on the site of a former sugar mill, it enjoys sensational views of the Caribbean Sea and the Piton Mountains.
There are 86 rooms and villas in total: 11 luxury Sugar Mill rooms, 67 luxury villa and luxury cottages and 8 luxury beachfront bungalows. Plantation style features throughout the resort.
Accommodation
Accommodation at Sugar Beach St Lucia is well appointed featuring lovely four poster beds with Egyptian sheets and voile draping, exquisitely designed large bathrooms with Victorian style bath (ground floor rooms only in the above Sugar Mill rooms) and a large walk-in shower; guests can make full use of complimentary Wi Fi with iPod docking station, large flat screen TVs, coffee and tea making facilities with private bar and an in-room safe. All villas and cottages feature an oversized plunge pool and patio.
- The luxury Sugar Mill rooms and super luxury Sugar Mill rooms each have a private walled garden, plunge pool, private patio and are designed in an elegant white plantation style. Both are within easy reach of the resort’s Great House, with lovely views; the only difference between the two being a roof terrace with the super luxury rooms.
- The spacious butler-serviced Superior Luxury, Grand Luxury, Ocean View Grand Luxury, two bedroomed Grand Luxury Villas, Guestrooms, Luxury Beachfront Bungalows and Residences feature all the facilities detailed above as well as personalised butler service.
- There are also a number of two, three and four bedroom Residences that feature a full kitchen, all the Villa amenities, plus infinity pools; Residences are set in walled gardens with large private decks.
Dining
Sugar Beach St Lucia offers a wonderful and varied selection of places to eat and drink.
Discerning diners should head for the Great Room, with its elegant, old world colonial charm; the excellent fine dinner menu is prepared by expert inspirational Chefs who utilise fresh local ingredients.
Sugar Beach’s Bay Side Bar and Restaurant is located on the beach, has wonderful views of the Piton mountains and offers open air dining and drinks. It serves wood-fired oven pizzas, speciality sandwiches and grilled catch of the day for lunch while in the evening has a range of menu selections as well as BBQs on selected dates. The Bar also offers a beach menu as well as a vast selection of drinks and cocktails.
The Palm Court Terrace, located on the ground floor of the Great House enjoys views of the lily pond and sugar mill ruins; come here for breakfast. Lovers of afternoon tea should head to the Palm Court Lounge. The Cane Bar employs a professional rum expert to guide guests through their choice of rums. And the hotel’s late night Cane Bar offers evening local cocktails which can be taken in the bar or on the open air terrace.
Sugar Beach also offers a “Dine Anywhere Anytime” programme where diners can (with 24 hours notice) specify the time and location for a personalised menu to suit their tastes and mood of the occasion. Private Cabanas are available for day use or private dining featuring a tapas style lunch and snacks for lunch or personalised menus for Dinner. In Room Dining is available from 6am to 12 pm.
Activties
Snorkelling equipment, sail boats, kayaks, windsurfers are provided on a complimentary basis and you can enjoy tennis, beach volleyball, jogging and walks. Scuba diving trips and full PADI courses can be arranged. The resort also features a fully equipped gym which offers yoga, pilates and aerobics. And for children, there are a number of supervised activities on offer as well as well as dance lessons and craft activities. Baby sitting can be arranged for an additional cost.
Sugar Beach’s classic Rainforest Spa features seven treehouse treatment gazebos together with two double treatment rooms, steam room, hairdressing salon and specialist facial room. Open daily from 8am to 7pm, the Spa utilises organic treatments and natural products from all over the world.
Sugar Beach also has a Wedding Specialist who can arrange the perfect Wedding package – it truly is an outstanding location for honeymoons.
