Travel consultant Bob Mortimore travelled to Barbados in November 2014 on a Barbados Travel Educational with Elegant Resorts. He had a superb time and was pleasantly impressed with Barbados’ progress since his last visit to this tropical island 16 years previously.
During his stay, Bob visited The Colony Club, The House, Tamarind, Coral Reef Club Hotel, The Sandpiper, Treasure Beach Hotel and Spa, The Fairmont Royal Pavillion, Cobblers Cove Hotel and Sandy Lane Hotel. Here’s his account of his visit to The Colony Club:
Colony Club Barbados
Originally founded as a private Colonial Club in the 1940’s and recently refurbished, Colony Club Barbados is in a timeless location on the west coast of Barbados on its own beach.
There are 96 rooms and suites, each with either a patio or a balcony and all are extremely comfortable and welcoming. Built of coral stone and with a plantation décor and style, the hotel has a relaxing and sophisticated feeling about it that compliments its legendary history. The Colony Club’s staff, most of whom have long service records, are all very friendly and helpful.
Colony Club Barbados has four lagoon-style swimming pools of fresh water situated around the property amidst lush gardens. The hotel offers plenty of space to relax and sunbathe in or alternatively there’s always the beach.
Colony Club’s two restaurants, the Laguna and the Sunset Deck, both offer high quality International and Bajan menus. There are two bars, the Sunset which has a “swim up” bar and the Laguna which serves fresh fruit and vegetable juices and a variety of cocktails; “Happy Hour” runs from 4 pm to 6pm.
Water sports, both motorized and non-motorized are all free and the hotel also offers a number of excursions. Colony Club Barbados also has an extensive organic vegetable garden and will even give you guided tours of the garden and grounds. Themed dinners are a speciality here: on Tuesdays, there is a Seaside Grill and International Buffet, while on Wednesdays there is aBajan Fish Grill. Thursday night is Lobster and Jazz night, which is very popular (and there are other food options other than Lobster).
Part of the Elegant Hotels Group, Colony Club Barbados is a lovely hotel that is equally suited for singles, couples and families. It caters very well for all their guests, has superb accommodation and food and the resort has a great ambiance throughout.
