Exploring Egypt with Red Sea Holidays

03 Mar 2014

Our cruise expert Corin recently travelled to Egypt courtesy of Red Sea Holidays to experience their Red Sea Hotels and Client Excursions. Corin thoroughly enjoyed her trip and was very impressed with what she saw and did. Here’s her account of a journey which included Makadi Bay, Hurghada, El Gouna and two amazing excursions…

I was extremely pleased to be invited to join Red Sea Holidays on their Travel Agent Educational Visit to experience their Red Sea Hotels and Client Excursions. The thought of spending time in the of warmth of this year round resort area sounded wonderfully appealing. Egypt is a huge country and this area (almost 300 miles from Cairo) is very safe and everyone we met was extremely friendly and welcoming.

FLIGHT – after a comfortable 6 hour flight from Gatwick Airport the aircraft lowered towards landing with incredible views of the Res Sea Mountains and Sarah Desert in view.

MAKADI BAY – a beautifully designed group of traditionally styles All-Inclusive hotels with a great range of facilities and dining opportunities.

SUNWING WATERWORLD MAKADI HOTEL – we stayed at this hotels for the first four nights. All rooms are spacious Junior Suites with a Terrace or Balcony. The Water Park is full of thrills and excitement for both adults and children alike – giant flumes with five water slides including a family slide, wave pool, lazy river, flow rider, rain fortress with slides, waterfalls and a water cannon. A hotel with many activities but very easy to find a quiet spot and escape with a book in the sunshine.

MAKADI SPA HOTEL – this very special Adult Only hotel has a wonderfully romantic feel with the WOW Factor as you walk through reception into in to a relaxing lounge/bar area with a dreamy view of the pool. Set in a fantastic location the property has great dining choices and the restaurants in the nearby Makadi Mall. The Junior Suites are fresh, spacious and very appealing. Highly recommended.

MAKADI PALACE HOTEL – one of the largest, most tastefully inviting pools ever awaits you – it mingles around everywhere and looks wonderful. Again a quality hotel with access to the private beach, an excellent choice of dining and spacious Junior Suite accommodation.

GRAND MAKADI HOTEL – a smaller hotel with great facilities and easiest access to the pier offering great fish viewing and snorkelling opportunities. A children’s mini club (hotel run) offering a children’s pool and playground, a daily kids’ movie and a daily mini disco – this facility is also available to families staying at the Makadi Palace Hotel. Again a good choice of dining and can recommend the Leonardo Restaurant (Italian Cuisine) + a lunchtime Buffet and BBQ in the restaurant close to the beach was a popular choice and very tasty too.
** JEEP SAFARI/BEDOUIN EXPERIENCE EXCURSION **- excitement built as we climbed into the jeeps, soon seat-belted and ready for action! Once heading along a dual carriageway towards the Red Sea Mountains and our drivers turned off onto a track and hey we were in the desert! It was wonderfully bumpy and exciting to see the other jeep racing through the sand behind us. A short stop allowed time to absorb the atmosphere and view a Mirage – it looked so real, and even resembled a lake on my photograph. Continuing towards the mountains and into the Bedouin Camp, complete with a large Bedouin Tent, Camels (yes, a ride is included), a climb up the lower mountains to take in a very special sunset and down for a BBQ before returning to base – a fun afternoon, definitely recommended.

SIVA GRAND BEACH HOTEL, HURGHADA – a hotel with a very friendly feel, a great design and a superb beach/waterfront location – it even has its own sandbank giving easy access to the sea. A very nice layout with a good choice of dining, including the Oasis Beach Restaurant for a lunchtime buffet. A hotel we would all happily return to.

FANADIR and MOSAIQUE HOTELS, EL GOUNA – El Gouna is a smaller, charming and quite sophisticated resort to the north of Hurghada. It has a delightful marina with some impressive boats in view, a number reasonably priced restaurants and interlinked lagoons which are popular for watersports. The Fanadir Hotel (Adult Only) and Mosaique Hotel are both quality European Managed Boutique Hotels on a Bed & Breakfast basis with a Half Board option. They both have character and fit perfectly into this delightful resort – felt it may appeal to couples looking to relax quietly after a Nile Cruise. El Gouna can be highly recommended for a peaceful relaxing break.

** PARADISE ISLAND EXCURSION ** – an early start awaited a full day of Red Sea sunshine, after a short drive to Hurghada Marina and being kitted out with snorkelling equipment it is time to board Paradise 3 and let the adventure begin. The Red Sea is amazingly clear and during both of our 1 hour Snorkelling Stops many fish could easily be seen around the edge of the coral reef – a great experience. On to Paradise Island for lunch and an afternoon on relaxation. This is where Red Sea Holidays come into their own having sole use of the dining area with a superb buffet and drinks included and then sole use of the parasols and beach mats. We departed at 3:45pm aiming to later see the sun setting behind the mountains and on the water but first some dolphin searching. Not guaranteed of course but with a member of the crew keenly looking out from the front we all felt excitingly hopeful and were not disappointed – a group of six dolphins played happily in front of us for several minutes giving a perfect end to a very enjoyable day. A highly recommended trip.

GRAND HOTEL, HURGHADA – a very family friendly beachfront excellent value All-Inclusive property. Set on its own private beach we found the standard of service for drinks and sunbeds very high. The hotel has quirkily colour co-ordinated some of its beautiful flowering trees with the bench seating – looks so cool! Relaxed beachfront buffet dining and a Kids Club, tennis courts, water slides all help to make this hotel surprisingly good value.

GRAND RESORT HOTEL, HURGHADA – a spacious quality hotel set back from the coast road with magnificent pools, a croquet lawn and a great range of dining choices including those in the nearby Grand Mall. Massage treatments are available at The Grand Spa is nicely located next to one of the pools offering a range of massage treatments, it looked welcoming and busy. The beach is easily accessible across the road through the Grand Hotel. This property is on a Bed & Breakfast basis with a Half Board option. Our final lunch in Egypt was at poolside Waterfront BBQ Lunchtime Buffet Restaurant with a wonderful choice – a superb way to finish a memorable visit to the Red Sea.

Thank you for arranging our trip to Athens. Hotel Hemes in Athens was a short walk away from everything we needed.

We had a great time in Kefalonia. The whole trip was very smooth and well organised by Ionian, and we would definitely use them again if going to that part of the world. We were also lucky with the weather, and even the hire car, as it appeared most of those who booked ahead of us had taken all the small cars leaving us with something slightly roomier and more powerful.

Living in Chorleywood, it gave us peace of mind to be able to speak directly to someone knowledgeable and book with a local Agent.
